THE ALL-SINGAPOREAN DREAM
With Crimson Star, more than just an idea for a superhero comic was born--the ambition behind it was to create a franchise that would allow local talent to spring board into a larger industry.
To best achieve that, each arc of the series would feature a new team of artists allowing the title to debut close to 60 fresh talents to comic fans. Not only would working on Crimson Star provide them with relevant experience, but having worked on a fully-realised, published comic book run would earn them industry credit and increase their visibility as artists. Similarly, variant covers will be done by regional artists to offer them similar recognition while also appealing to regional readers. |
THE ALL-SINGAPOREAN DREAM |
BUSINESS
Crimson Star will be the first ongoing Singaporean superhero comic created, written, and illustrated by an all-Singaporean team.
A comic series depicting the career of Singapore's first superhero, Crimson Star, is in an original universe of stories and also offers the unique opportunity to employ local artists striving to join the comic book industry. This would also provide local readers a homegrown series that can appeal to new, young readers as well as older, seasoned readers. Much like other comic book brands, Crimson Star is designed with the potential of existing on multimedia platforms, such as animated shows for television, feature films, apparel, toys, and even video/computer games. And it all begins with comic books. |
THE BUSINESS |
MARKET
The global comic book market has somewhat plateaued. With old brands incapable of satisfactorily rebranding themselves for a new age, they've turned to other media platforms in search of longevity and fiscal prosperity.
It also suffers from a crisis of an aging population as complicated storylines are unable to attract younger readers despite their love for the genre. Ironically, this has led to an all-time high demand for superhero comics... that also also offer new, original content. While Singapore has yet to produce a title capable of grabbing the imagination of the public, Crimson Star, with its western comics-influenced approach, dynamic art, and culturally-familiar premise promises to change that with fresh tales of a new hero! |

PROGRESS
With a total of 25 stories over 65 issues planned out, the storytelling aspect of Crimson Star is well ahead of schedule. It is also being adapted for the medium of television (as an all-ages animated series) as well as a game in a collaborative effort with local game developers.
While an early attempt at a Kickstarter campaign failed, it helped raise awareness which has since resulted in successful social media activities including a competition in May and a month-long Fan Art Friday campaign in June with submissions from local and international artists keen on supporting the comic. We have recruited a team of artists ranging from fresh talents to those with cult followings to provide the series' art with issue #01 already under way. |

FUTURE
With comic books, the possibilities are endless. Not only are comic characters multimedia darlings, they also thrive on most platforms as if they were native to it.
Currently, not only is Crimson Star in production as a comic book, the character's already been given a modified origin tale suitable for an animated television series, while also being developed for a video game and table top card game. Within the next 2 years, the Crimson Star Intellectual Property is expected to exist on these different multimedia platforms while continuing with his comic book adventures. With this limitless potential, Crimson Star could be the gateway to a thriving new industry for Singapore, creating jobs and opportunities in a yet to be explored market. |
